Artist's Statement
"I grew up on a kiwi fruit farm just north of Auckland, my childhood was spent exploring nature, I would collect cicada shells and was fascinated by how they were able to get out of their shells leaving them clung to the vine in one entire piece. I watched in admiration as the bees pollinated the kiwifruit flowers every spring and observed the process of nature's cycle from year to year. Another piece of my childhood was spent trying to cope with family disputes and chaos, powerless to stop this, I would often escape across the field to the peace of nature. It is through creating art that I have gained a better understanding of my past and present experiences and also my relationship with others.
I currently have two different bodies of work that express my connection with nature and emotion. I work predominantly in the medium of acrylic paint and also graphite & ink.
My current large scale nature scenes with native New Zealand birds convey my admiration of the various species of flora and fauna and their intricate details. I enjoy the focus and attention to detail required to create a realistic scene which can take up to 130 hours on each piece to create. I also find that getting lost in the details of these nature paintings help me to escape any pressures of life.
I then allow myself this sense of balance by releasing the detailed focused work and switch to the abstracts using an intuitive creation process, confronting and expressing any current or past emotion and state of mind.
I currently have two series of abstract artwork, Freedom of Flight is primarily about raising my frequency and freeing myself from negativity, taking inspiration from the freedom, colours and tonal variations of birds. My Sea Dreams series expresses a personal narrative either from dreams I've had, from past experiences, lessons I’ve learned or from day to day thoughts that arise. Water is a metaphor for the emotion and how it is portrayed through varying brush strokes, movement, colour and tone is the particular feeling or experience that I am trying to convey, often giving a clue in the title. I mainly work with a cool palette which I am drawn to not only for its reference to water and emotion but also for it’s calming effects.
In this fast paced society I aim to bring a sense of harmony and awareness through my artwork. I hope that you as the viewer are able to connect with my artwork in some way that either inspires you or relates to your own journey in life. For me, creating and exhibiting artwork is an extremely rewarding process I will spend my life time exploring."
