About Kim Randall
Kim Randall was born in Auckland in 1983, she grew up embracing the rural kiwi life, surrounded by nature. Kim has always had a passion for art from a very young age, she studied art extensively through school and during tertiary education she studied interior design whilst furthering her fine art skills with painting and drawing classes. She completed a bachelor of design in 2007 and then practised as an interior designer in Auckland with an architectural firm.
Kim spent two years in Europe working and travelling whilst taking many photographs as her creative outlet. Since returning home to New Zealand in April 2012 she has been focused on following her passion as an artist. She spent four years at Lake House Arts Centre gaining many skills in arts administration, in 2013 she had a successful first solo exhibition there titled ‘Moments of Equanimity’. Kim became a full time artist in August 2016 in order to develop her art practice to its full potential.

" I grew up on a kiwi fruit farm just north of Auckland, my childhood was spent exploring nature, somewhat protected from the outside world. I would collect things like cicada shells, I was fascinated by how they were able to get out of their shells leaving them clung to the vine in one entire piece. I watched in admiration as the bees pollinated the kiwifruit flowers every spring and the process of nature's cycle from year to year. We had a creek running through the property which we explored, making rafts and visiting the glowworms along the bank at night. We had behives that were kept on our family land, the gift of honeycomb it gave I felt great appreciation for. Another piece of my childhood was spent trying to cope with family disputes and chaos, powerless to stop this, I would often escape across the field to the peace of nature. I gain a great deal of healing through my connection with nature and creating artwork from the experience.

I work predominantly in the mediums of acrylic paint, graphite & ink, using a variety of techniques including paper cutting which I have developed from the meticulous process of interior model making at design school and have translated into my art practice. I work often with a cool or muted palette which I am drawn to for its calming effects.

I currently have three different series of work which I call: Place, Nature & Emotion, I am simultaneously developing and refining these series in order to develop a distinctive style and unified art practice. The landscape scenes often capture the tranquil feeling of dusk where I feel most uplifted and visually inspired by the harmonious contrasts of the changing light. The native New Zealand bird series are created in a variety of mediums and techniques conveying my admiration of both their beauty and their freedom. I often use a circular or oval element to frame my subject and soften the eye. I address my inner emotions and conflicts in the ‘Sea Dreams & Metaphoric’ series to express and release feelings either from dreams I've had or from day to day thoughts and emotions; water is a metaphor for the emotion and how it presents itself is what I'm expressing. In this series I use an intuitive or spontaneous creation process with little use of reference images.

In this fast paced society I aim to bring a sense of harmony and awareness through my artwork. I hope that you as the viewer are able to connect with my artwork in someway that either inspires you or relates to your own journey in life. For me, creating and exhibiting artwork is an extremely rewarding process I will spend my life time exploring."
